Brief description of site
Downton Castle features a hilly and wooded Picturesque landscape park of the late 18th century, laid out along a river gorge crossed by ornamental bridges.
Brief history of site
Richard Payne Knight inherited the estate in 1772 and developed its Picturesque layout. Terrace gardens were added by W.A. Nesfield in 1865. The site is now a National Nature Reserve.
