The following is from the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest:
Appuldurcombe House built c.1701-13 for Sir Robert Worsley, on site of C16 building. Architect uncertain, most probably John James. Entrance (to west) remodelled and Tuscan colonnade added to south in 1770s by James Wyatt for Sir Richard Worsley. House uninhabited since 1909, and, as a ruin, in guardianship of Ministry of Works since 1952 (now English Heritage).
Site timeline
After 1779: Capability Brown was called in, and subsequently produced a plan for 'alterations of the Place'.

An obelisk dating from 1774 is sited on high ground. It was struck by lightning 1831, and remains as a tall, stepped cairn of shaped blocks.
