Brief history of site
A manor house had existed since at least the late 13th century. The old manor house was demolished after 1719, and a new house was completed by 1739. New formal gardens and terraces were laid out to provide a setting for the house, with a walled garden to the south. During the second half of the 18th century the formal gardens were removed and replaced with informal lawns.
