Narrative:
Thomas Mawson was born in Lancashire, England. He worked from the age of 12 for builders and in nurseries. He established a family nursery and contracting firm, Mawson Brothers, in Windermere, Cumbria, England around 1882, where he began designing private gardens. This led to commissions from all parts of the country, including public parks and town planning schemes.
In 1900, Mawson set up his own landscape design practice, becoming the leading designer of his day. His commissions included parks, gardens and townscapes in England and overseas.
Mawson wrote two books: The Art and Craft of Garden Making (1900) and Civic Art (1911). In 1929 he became the first president of the Institute of Landscape Architects.
