Formerly of Wolsingham, County Durham, England, Backhouse moved to Sutton Court, Sutton St. Nicholas, Herefordshire, England in 1886. There he began to breed new cultivars of daffodil, many of which became commercially successful. He continued this practice until his death at his home at Sutton Court on 4 April 1940.
