Narrative:

Robert Ormston Backhouse was a member of the noted Backhouse family of horticulturalists and naturalists. He was born in 1854, the third son of the horticulturalist and naturalist, William Backhouse (born 1807, died 1869).

Formerly of Wolsingham, County Durham, England, Backhouse moved to Sutton Court, Sutton St. Nicholas, Herefordshire, England in 1886. There he began to breed new cultivars of daffodil, many of which became commercially successful. He continued this practice until his death at his home at Sutton Court on 4 April 1940.
