George Edmund Street - Summary

George Edmund Street, architect, was born at Woodford, Essex on 20th June 1824. He is well-known for ecclesiastical buildings and additions made to churches, cathedrals and minsters throughout England. Whilst his early works were distinctly high-Victorian and alluded to A. W. N. Pugin, Street was not scared to look at alternatives such as the gentle picturesque. He served as president of the Royal Institute of British Architects and as professor of architecture at the Royal Academy. He died at his home, 14 Cavendish Square, London, on 18th December 1881.
