Abbey Gate College starts garden restoration project

The Head Gardener at Abbey Gate College, Alan Kift, has recently started work on restoring the formal gardens laid out in 1901 by Inigo Triggs .

The present building, formerly known as Saighton Grange, was built in stages between 1837 and 1901, when it was owned by the Grosvenor family, Marquesses (later Dukes) of Westminster. The formal gardens surrounding the house were designed in 1901 by Inigo Triggs. There are three gardens to the South of the house: the Rose Garden, the Grey Garden and the Saints' Garden. To the West of the house are a series of terraced gardens including the Fishpond Garden and the Long Bank.

Work has recently started on restoring these gardens to their former state, funded at present by the College.

The gardens are open as part of the National Gardens Scheme and guided tours are possible by appointment.
