Shaw House shows off £6 million restoration
The Elizabethan manor of Shaw House in Newbury opens to the public on 28 October after a £6 million restoration. The house was built in 1581 by Thomas Dolman, and its garden features the earthwork remains of 17th-century gardens laid out by the Dolman family.
King Charles I made the house his headquarters during the second Battle of Newbury in 1644, and it was one of Queen Anne’s official residences in the early 18th century.
The restoration, which began in 2005, was carried out with money from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Vodafone and English Heritage .
